How To Become A Yacht Stewardess
The yachting industry is notoriously hard to get a job. It's fun, it's exciting, and everyone wants to do it. From yacht stewardess training to having the right attitude - here are five ways you can secure a position for yourself.
What is a yacht stewardess?
This is an entry-level position in the world of yachting. In this role, you would deal with all the interior maintenance of the superyacht and provide the highest standard of hоѕрitаlity for owners and guests. You are the first touchpoint for guests in the exciting, fast-paced yachting industry.
What does a yacht stewardess do?
This can vary and depends on the size of the yacht. The standard stewardess role will involve cleaning crew mess, detailing, cleaning windows, serving guests, making drinks, and lots of polishing.
How to Become A Yacht Stewardess
Like any new position, having the relevant skills will make you more likely to get the job. Whether it be taking a yacht stewardess course or specific yacht stewardess training – your level of expertise will determine your success.
I have compiled five tips to help you become a yacht stewardess:
- Have the right attitude
- Pass an ENG1 medical
- Complete STCW Training
- Yacht stewardess training course
- Go to a superyacht marina (depending on your location) and register online with all crew agents. You can also use social media platforms to look for a new job.
Have the right attitude
Of course, your competence and your knowledge of the yachting world come into play when trying to find a job. However, one of the major things captains look for is a good attitude. Specific attributes will help you thrive in this industry. I have outlined some of these attributes below:
- Must be well presented and articulate
- Must know how to take orders and use their initiative.
- Must do everything with a positive attitude and a smile.
- Must be able to work long hours without losing patience and getting too stressed
No matter how good your yacht stewardess CV is, I would not recommend this as a career if you do not have most of these qualities.
Pass ENG1 medical
The ENG1 medical is an examination by the MCA (Maritime and Coastguard Agency). This is where a doctor will assess your ability to work and deem you worthy or not. Everyone on a yacht holds one of these.
Take STCW safety Training
STCW Basic Safety Training is another requirement in the yachting world. It is usually part of your yacht stewardess course training, and if you have it before applying for jobs, you will be more successful in getting a job. It stands for 'Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping', and you will learn everything from firefighting to sea survival.
Get yacht stewardess training
Showing extra qualifications not only demonstrates your willingness to learn but also your competency in this industry. It could be a good idea to take a dedicated yacht stewardess course to upskill and learn everything you need to find a job. Having something like this on your CV is excellent for captains to see.
Go to a superyacht marina
You have your yacht stewardess CV, and you've taken a yacht stewardess training course – so now it's time to find a boat. Going to the superyacht marinas and handing out your CV is a great way to find work.
